Working out with barbells at home

May 1, 2025

I’m a big fan of barbell training at home. I love the simplicity and rawness of a barbell, power rack, and bench. It’s not fancy, but you can do so much with it.

From a strength perspective, it’s essential as it can scale up as you get stronger. With basic equipment, all your key exercise patterns are covered. Sure, you can’t do everything, but you’re well covered with just that setup.

If you have the space, it’s a worthwhile investment. The main reason I like training at home is convenience. I don’t like complicated setups or spending time arranging things. I want to get in, train, and get out.

Having a limited number of tools can be a great constraint to have. It’s forced simplicity.

Finally, I find it easier to fit into my day, especially since I work from home a few days a week. There’s no real excuse not to walk over to my garage and get a quick workout in. And with kids, it’s a game-changer. I don’t have to leave the house or organise childcare. Of course, it’s not for everyone. It’s all about what works for you.
